For this internship, I had the challenge of evaluating and creating multiple pieces of content for a diversity of platforms. To tackle this challenge, I relied on my knowledge of color, type, layout and diverse cultures to create engaging and creative work that grew WORDTheatre's audience.
Internship

During my internship at WORDTheatre, a remarkable nonprofit organization with a mission to connect people worldwide through powerful storytelling performed by renowned actors from film, television, and theater, I had the privilege to work alongside a diverse team who believed in the transformative power of literature. As a social media, communications, and graphic design intern, I collaborated with three other interns and reported to the marketing head, my supervisor. My main responsibility was to curate engaging content for WORDTheatre's Instagram and Twitter accounts to promote upcoming events, their podcast, and the organization as a whole. Crafting compelling copy and captivating visuals, I aimed to ignite curiosity, foster conversations, and deepen understanding about the diverse and fascinating stories presented by WORDTheatre. In addition to my work on Instagram and Twitter, I occasionally created content for TikTok, showcasing the organization's commitment to exploring new platforms and engaging with a broader audience. I also had the opportunity to design event programs and a newsletter, ensuring that the WORDTheatre experience extended beyond digital spaces. As part of my role, I conducted research on social media trends and strategies, enabling the organization to stay at the forefront of digital engagement. I also explored emerging platforms like Substack, identifying new opportunities for WORDTheatre to reach and resonate with its audience effectively. Throughout my internship, I witnessed the alchemy of collaboration that brought together literature, art, and performance, resulting in impactful storytelling experiences. Working in an environment that celebrated the power of language and its ability to reflect the complexities of our world was truly inspiring. My time at WORDTheatre allowed me to contribute to a noble mission while honing my skills in social media and graphic design. I am immensely grateful for the experience and proud to have been part of a team that championed bold and relevant narratives.

Event Program

For this design, I had the challenge of staying within brand guidelines and working with set assets and copy to create a pleasing event program. I decided to limit my color palette to black, white and yellow to echo social media posts that I had made for the event (see above) and create a clean look. I, then, played with variations of the typefaces and color blocking to create hierarchy and break up the information so it was easily digestible.

A Memorial to Julian Sands

Julian Sands tragically died while on a hike in early 2023. He was frequent performer at WORDTheatre and a friend of the founder, Cedering Fox. I was tasked with making a memorial post for him using the images and sound recordings we had in our archives. Since many look at social media in places where their sound can't be on, I created subtitles. It was important that even if viewers didn't hear Julian's voice, they at least new what he was saying because that was integral to the message of the post. RIP Julian Sands.

JAZZ Re-EVOLUTION

At WORDTheatre, one of the major events I contributed to was called JAZZ Re-EVOLUTION, a captivating night celebrating the rich history of Jazz through the voices of artists from New Orleans to Los Angeles. As part of the marketing team, I played a key role in brainstorming the event's visual identity, drawing inspiration from Paula Scher's iconic "Bring In Da' Noise Bring In Da' Funk" posters for the Public Theater in New York. Using Canva, Adobe Illustrator, and After Effects, I crafted social media posts that perfectly captured the decided design aesthetic as well as experimenting with innovative approaches to engage the audience.

Coordinating with talent, I reached out via email to ensure smooth social media promotion. As part of the team effort, all interns, including myself, participated in distributing flyers to generate awareness. I, additionally, helped in this effort by creating a map of suggested locations and helped to update it with where different groups stopped and whether they were successful.

On the day of the event, I provided on-site assistance, escorting talent, and assisting with event setup, food service, and cleanup. The culmination of our hard work resulted in an enchanting night under the stars, with esteemed actors and musicians transporting the audience through the captivating stories about Jazz's illustrious past.  Collaborating on JAZZ Re-EVOLUTION allowed me to witness the power of storytelling and its ability to bring people together in celebration of art and culture.

After the performance (and taking a moment to recover), I designed a newsletter for all the WORDTheatre subscribers about the event that included backstage photos and interviews with the cast. This newsletter got the most interaction of any newsletter sent out by WORDTheatre to date.

20th Anniversary Celebrations

WORDTheatre is turning 20 and holding parties in 3 different cities - London, New York, and Los Angeles. They had created the look for their 20th anniversary  before I started working with them, so most of my work around this has been collaborating with other interns to create content to promote the anniversary that is within the established look but works in several different platforms. One way we are promoting the events is through the WORDTheatre Short Story podcast which is what this post is for. I played with typography to create a dynamic post for social media. Specifically, I focused on ways to vary the type to give clear hierarchy and add visual interest.
